CANYON CALIFORNIA[edit]
the most wonderful place a child could grow up in. We moved there in 1946 quite by accident. I was 6 yrs old. I went to Canyon school when it was only a one room school. Then they added the 2nd room. I attended school there from 1st grade through 8th. Then on to the new high school,Miramonte,1955 to 1959 the first class all the way through. In my 8th grade graduating class from Canyon School there were 8 children, 3 boys and 3 girls, and one of them was my sister, (she skipped a grade). Now there are 65 children, WOW! Where do they live?
The EBMUDD bought all the homes and property they could and tore them down. My Mother refused to sell to EBMUDD, but the person she sold her house to eventually sold out to EBMUDD, so it is not there anymore.
I sadly left Canyon in 1967 because of the so called alternative lifestyle. It was not safe to raise my 3 children there anymore.
It was the most awesome and wonderful place beneath the Redwood, Euctalyptus, Madrone and the wonderful smelling Bay Trees. We spent hours playing and and hunting for agates in the creek. Today when I smell the aroma of a bay tree it brings back a flood of wonderful memories. We were very active, outdoor children, and we probably traversed every inch of canyon, building forts, hiking, and snooping around! One of the things I remember and have thought a lot about lately is there was an old white haired man by the name of Mr. Montgomery (I do not remember his first name)in a place called "Montgomery Canyon" (above the RR tracks) who would get us kids up to his house and tell us he was the one who invented the airplane, and that the Wright Brothers stole the plans from him. He was very adamant about this and bitter about this and wanted us to know this fact, so in the future possibly this could be rectified. I think about this every time I see the Wright Brothers glorified on TV. Barbara Goss Kroboth
