Where did the term "sounding" as in measuring depths from a ship, come from? What's the origin of the phrase?

Biblical Soundings[edit]

Acts 27:28 provides a historical example. 24.214.233.218 (talk) 10:50, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Etymology[edit]

The "probably came from...was the hull sound, as in healthy" seems wrong and may be WP:NOR. According to the OED it comes from Old English "sund", swim, i.e., putting the weight in the water. I propose to change this. --Old Moonraker (talk) 07:32, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
