Ownership of railway[edit]

The main railways carrying interstate traffic were not hived off to NR - they were put into (I think) Network Access, part of AN, which then became ARTC. (Sulzer55 (talk) 10:51, 16 March 2008 (UTC))[reply]

From ARTC - http://www.artc.com.au/Content.aspx?p=32:
Australian National was also being readied for privatisation and to accommodate the open access requirements of competition policy and partially as a forerunner to privatisation, a separate business unit known as AN Track Access was set up within AN to administer access to the interstate track under AN control.

Implausible statement[edit]

"Australian National Railways Commission was an Australian Government owned corporation and, in 1978, the Whitlam Government made it clear to the Commission that it was expected to achieve a financial break-even point during the next 10 years." The above cannot be correct as Whitlam Government left office in 1975.Eregli bob (talk) 13:09, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

With the commencement of operation of the Australian Rail Track Corporation Ltd, the new company acquired the old AN interstate standard gauge track and a lease management of the Victorian interstate standard gauge
