Chorus[edit]
"The famed chorus, "Take me down to the paradise city where the grass is green and the girls are pretty", is thought to be a reference to heroin, Slash requested it be "Take me down to the paradise city where the girls are fat and they got big titties", but it was turned down."
Source?
Infact, most repeated, is that the original line was "Take me down to the paradise city where the grass is free and the girls are busy", but it was changed since it would be promoting drugs and prositution. 'Grass is green'is not an obious drug-reference enough to awake the studios feel for censorship. ~~ Zarkow

Similarities with Zero The Hero[edit]
The main guitar line and solo has a striking similarity to the 1983 Black Sabbath song "Zero the Hero". They even mention it in the liner notes in Castle's 1997 remaster of the Born Again album. 24.68.128.128 05:26, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
Mariah Carey[edit]
Yeahh I said left something on the user's talk page who added it, but I've never heard of it before myself. GrimmC (talk) 04:34, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
Similarities with Macarena[edit]
Is it just me, or does the main riff sound oddly like the chorus of Macarena? Lord Of Demise (talk) 20:53, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
I thought I was the only person that notice that. I would toggle between singing both songs to the paradise city melody and putting in the Macarena lyrics — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tapalmer99 (talk • contribs) 15:09, 7 July 2019 (UTC)
Metal[edit]
Not only did the song make VH1's 40 greatest metal songs list, but its riff is also a lot like "Zero the Hero". If "Zero the Hero" can be listed as a metal song than I don't get why "Paradise City" can't. Opinions? Rockgenre (talk) 20:02, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
Indie paraphrase[edit]
The indie song Liar and a Thief paraphrases paradise city quite surprisingly:
So take me down to the paradise city Where the grass is green and the girls are just like you where I can start again

Song references rubbish[edit]
How stupid are you people? "Paradise City" is NOT about "a mansion right on Lake Geneva" they "rented during the production of Appetite for Destruction." "Paradise" was written WAY before the production stages of Appetite. They performed it live as early as January 1986: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmYd3L5PEYc so they obviously didn't know about some fucking mansion at that time and could not have written a song about it. And obviously Paradise City is NOT about The Netherlands because they've NEVER BEEN there before the release of Appetite. Read some books before writing such stupid crap. I deleted all that rubbish from the article. Kreepin Deth (talk) 10:19, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
- I appreciate what you stated, you are absolutely right, people should not write whatever they like. That was rubbish indeed, but please remember: try to be polite all the time, even when you see things this bad.FateForger (talk) 11:27, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
Rewrite of a Rose Tattoo song[edit]
Can anyone actually deny that this song ISN'T a rewrite of a song released seven years earlier (1981) called "Suicide City" by Rose Tattoo? The main guitar riff in "Paradise City" is pretty much identical to the one in "Suicide City" albeit played at a lower speed. And see if you can find the similarities in the lyrics:
"Suicide City": "Suicide City where the girls are so pretty The boys walk home in the rain Suicide City, isn't it a pity Brain drain's the name of the game"
"Paradise City": "Take me down to the paradise city Where the grass is green And the girls are pretty Take me home"
I don't see how anyone can deny the similarities between the songs and the fact that Rose Tattoo was one of Guns N Roses primary influences cements it for me. Anyone else think this is worth mentioning in the article? 216.106.228.109 (talk) 07:30, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
- If you can provide a reliable source backing this then it could be mentioned in the article. What you have stated falls under original research. I very much doubt it is a rewrite though. HrZ (talk) 10:21, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
