JD_UK[edit]
Final(3/17/0) Ended 19:05, 2006-07-18 (UTC)
JD_UK (talk · contribs) – I came across this user on Talk:Big Brother (UK series 7) and he/she came across to me as a very respectable experienced user. I was surprised to find that her/his first edit was only in February this year, and considering there are nearly 3700 edits - more than 1000 in the last month, so very active on Wikipedia. For a moment I thought that this user was an administrator! This user also does a lot to fight vandalism, an issue with which administrive tools could enhance. I have also found this user to be polite and helpful, and has made a good contribution in his/her time here. --Alex9891 (talk) 10:14, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

- Strong Support. JD UK has been a great editor on many articles and is a key part of WikiProject Big Brother. As Alex9891 says, JD UK does a lot to fight vandalism. He always argues his points in a clear, concise and diplomatic way, so for these reasons, and many more, he gets my full support! Good Luck!! ellisjm 11:38, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

- Oppose
- Oppose due to the way I felt he gave up too easily on Mediation in his case with 9cds.[1] Ansell 11:51, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose - The whole constant arguing with 9cds and handling of that situations says to me he isn't ready. pschemp | talk 12:39, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- Strong Oppose Again, I may have gotten carried away with this explanation, but I just wanted to be clear. The primary concern is that you don't appear to handle stress well. Your threat to delete your account, as mentioned by Ansell, was not only impossible for you to carry out, but also a sign of grossly mishandling the issue (especially because it appears by that discussion that you were right in that conflict). A week and a half ago, you stated that you were essentially leaving Wikipedia over 9cds and only retracted the message on July 12, when 9cds was indefinitely blocked (that can't be a coincidence). A couple months after this situation, I might have been okay, but I find it unbelieveable that just six days after coming off retirement, you request adminship (I sense a desire for revenge on people like 9cds). As an admin, you would have the ability to block people and I'm afraid you would be quick to push the block button in disputes that involve you and agitate you just so you can eliminate the stress (instead of bringing the issue to the attention of other admins and asking for a second opinion). Additionally, JD_UK seems to not understand the fair use policy. Looking at his user talk page, he has a lot of messages regarding fair use images he has uploaded. They may be incorrect, but he has uploaded a lot of fair use images (fair use can't be cited in every instance) and he even had one on his user page quite recently. JD_UK has been warned about his incivility and revert warring - which he actually mentions in one of his answers below (I'm glad you're being honest). And lastly, I feel JD UK's scope of edits is far too narrow; other than his wonderful vandal-fighting efforts, I see almost solely edits to articles related to Big Brother Australia; that's reflected in his talk page comments as well. I would like to see some more experience in other fields (you'll need to interact with the larger portion of the Wikipedia community as an admin). That's especially perplexing because his issues with 9cds provided a perfect opportunity to take a break from Big Brother related articles and go explore. But JD_UK didn't. And so, based on all this, I must oppose. Return in October with more restraint and more editing scope and I'd consider supporting. -- joturner 12:44, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- Can I just remind you that JD_UK was nominated by me, and not by himself. --Alex9891 (talk) 16:51, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- Reluctant oppose per Joturner. Also, due to a relatively low project space edit count. -- Steel 13:41, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose - fails my criteria in the following: At least 350 Wikipedia space edits; No edit warring; Acting civil at all times (some of the debates got a bit too heated); and a Limited range of articles edited doesn't help —Mets501 (talk) 13:47, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- Weak Oppose Not cool enough under fire. Also most edits seem to be vandal fighting and not alot else which is fine but IMO doesn't make a good enough editor. -- Errant talk(formerly tmorton166) 13:56, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose per joturner. As Jo mentioned, some more time and experience could well lead to a different outcome. Gwernol 14:08, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose per joturner. A higher level of maturity as an editor is necessary; that is generally easy to achieve with enough time and a more varied experience on the wiki. --bainer (talk) 14:46, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- Weak Oppose I agree with Ansell and Joturner that you do not handle stress well and you'll be exposed to more stress by becoming an admin, but you are very active in Wikipedia. --Tuspm 15:04, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose per first oppose.--Kungfu Adam (talk) 15:08, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose Fails my criteria due to low amount of edits in the Wikipedia project space. --Wisden17 15:34, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- STRONG Oppose per Ansell and pschemp. 1ne 15:38, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- Firm Oppose The incident involving JD_UK and 9cds has not left me particularly impressed. JD_UK's unwillingness to properly understand fair use, in particular, is not something I would expect of an admin. - Tangotango 15:40, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose per Joturner. --Shizane 16:08, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

- Questions for the candidate
Dear candidate, thank you for offering to serve Wikipedia in this capacity. Please take the time to answer a few generic questions to provide guidance for voters:
- 1. What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with? Please check out Category:Wikipedia backlog, and read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.
- A: As I spend a lot of time on the internet, I would be able to get quite a bit done. The most major thing I'd like to do is be able to do a better job with the vandalism thing; the sysop stuff would make that a bit easier. I would also help out with AIV, some speedy deletion candidates, and other templates and articles for deletion. There seems to be a bit of a backlog on some other stuff that I'd be happy to help out with.
- 2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
- A: Tis a bit tragic answering this question, becuase the stuff I'm "particularly pleased with" are my contributions to the reality television articles. Big Brother Australia series 6 is probably the article that's received most of my attention of late, but I've also helped with {{Big Brother housemates}}; but my new design wasn't liked by all, so that got reverted. But yeah, reality television is probably what I'm most pleased with at the moment.
- 3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
- A: I think the most major thing that's happened recently would be the conflicts and arguments that have gone on between 9cds and myself. We were involved in a few edit conflicts, revert wars, and some very heated dicussions. I tried to move away from where all the arguments were caused, but obviously I didn't move far enough as 9cds kinda moved with me... Granted, she had good reason to be editing the article I moved to, given that it was in the same category; and technically there's nothing stopping her from doing so, but I did try to move to something else that wouldn't affect my contributions to Wikipedia. Anyway, also tried to resolve the situation by opening a mediation case, and I also tried to approach 9cds quite a few times on IRC. After many arguments and whatnot, and what I thought was a cease fire, 9cds opened an RfC, and an RfArb against me, that have since been closed because of 9cds's indefinite block.
- I was also in a bit of a conflict with Ste4k over the tense of an article, and that ended with the article being put up for deletion. I didn't try to escalate that problem either, but that got a bit out of hand unnecessarily.
- I think that in future, if I'm going to experience conflict with any users, I should literally stop editing on that article, and probably start editing on it again after the users I might be having conflict with has stopped editing the article as much, or has stopped whatever it was that was causing the conflict. I would definitely try talking to the user calmly, and in a way that won't cause conflict or argument, or sound condescending.
Optional Questions from User:Tmorton166 :
- After your recent mediation case / dispute etc. with 9CS do you think you have learnt anything from it. As Ansell has stated you didn't react well towards the end of the mediation case which isn't the sort of attitude for an admin - can you explain why you felt that way?
- That mediation case was a while ago, and my response at the end of it was an "in the heat of the moment" thing. At the time, I think I was over-reacting a bit, and didn't feel that anything could help the situation. Looking back on it now, I do wish I continued the case, as a better resolution could have been acheived. I regret letting that situation go as far as it did. If I'm ever in that situation again, and I am doing my best to not, the one thing I won't do is give up on mediation so quickly. --JD[don't talk|email] 14:09, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- By far the more important question IMO: I see you do alot of vandalism rv's - which account for the majority of your edits. But there are plenty of people around doing that! Are you planning to take part in other chores. Such as wikifying, RC / new page patrolling, welcoming and general editing.
- I see vandalism reverting as something that occupies a lot of time - once I start I don't really want to stop too soon because of the chance that I might miss something. That doens't mean to say vandalism reverting is the only thing I would do if I were an admin - I can do that now. I would be willing to contribute to as many things as I can, including new page patrolling, welcoming, and wikifying articles. General editing isn't something that I would stop doing unless I absolutely had to, even if I don't have a lot to offer in that area. --JD[don't talk|email] 14:09, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
