Some researchers are pursuing evidence which suggests that integrin subunits may function as monomers. Whether or not this turns out to be the case, "obligate" is too strong a word.
Dear Kent, that's as may be, but there is no evidence in the existing literature that a monomeric integrin subunit exists as a functional entity on the cell surface. So until there is, let's leave it at obligate shall we? Or else please do cite the reference(s) which you think indicate a valid study showing presence of a functioning monomer.
Changed "most multicellular organisms" to "all metazoans". Integrins are exclusive to the animal kingdom.
