The end of the Indy car series at TWS[edit]

In 1973, Mario Andretti set a world closed course lap record of 214.158 mph at TWS.

In one race shortly before the formation of CART, there was a protest about the rules at TWS. Many of the USAC drivers ran their qualifying laps at quite slow speeds. The slowest was something like 80 mph. I probably still have a press copy of the starting lineup for that race with the qualifying times but it might take a while to find it if there is any interest in that.

Also, the Willie Nelson 1974 4th of July Picnic was held at TWS.
