Afghanistan-Albania relations are the international relations between Afghanistan and Albania.

War in Afghanistan[edit]

During the American-led war in Afghanistan, Albania began deploying troops to participate in peacekeeping efforts there. The first contingent of Albanian troops were sent to Afghanistan in November 2002.[1] A second contingent was deployed in February 2003.[2] The Albanian troops of that deployment, and subsequent deployments, operated under the command of NATO countries such as Turkey and Italy. Albania's support of the peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan was part of its bid to join NATO.[3][4] Albania joined NATO in 2009.[5]

Albania established diplomatic ties with Afghanistan in 2006.[6][7] In addition to peacekeeping efforts in Afghanistan, Albania has contributed to rebuilding efforts by offering scholarships to Afghan students.[8] Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in January 2009, during which the two discussed Albania's role in peacekeeping and rebuilding efforts in Afghaninsta, the economic reforms Albania has implemented to attract foreign investment and tourism, energy development, and a possible student exchange programme to allow Afghan students to study in Albania.[9]
